One Goal: Get the Food and Return to the Couch
Lazy Ass follows a character who wants to collect food from around the house and return to the couch to eat in front of the television. That simple goal becomes much harder because the house contains dangerous obstacles and enemies.
Food appears around each stage rather than sitting safely beside the character. Reaching it means leaving the couch and moving through the level.
The game uses this funny setup to build a platform challenge. The character may want to stay lazy, but the player needs to put in plenty of effort to get every piece of food.
Jump From Couch to Couch
The left and right arrow keys control movement. Jumping works in a less common way. The player holds the down arrow and then releases it to launch the character.
Good jumps need planning. Holding a direction near the edge of a platform can build momentum for a larger leap. Timing the release helps the character reach places that would otherwise sit too far away.
This system means the character does not move like a normal platform hero with a standard jump button. The player needs to learn how far each launch can travel.
Food Is Not the Only Thing to Watch
Lazy Ass places monsters and spikes around the house. The player needs to avoid these dangers while gathering food. Landing on the couch also matters during the journey.
A remote control can give the character another useful option. After getting the remote, the player can press the space bar to shoot at monsters.
This adds a small action element to the jumping challenge. Some problems can be avoided through movement. Others can be dealt with using the remote.
Finish the Food Run
A successful level involves collecting the needed food and making it back safely rather than wandering through the house without a goal. Some stages demand more careful movement than others.
The space bar also handles restarting after a failed attempt and continuing after a completed level.
Lazy Ass gets most of its personality from the strange contrast at the center of the game. The character only wants snacks and television, yet getting those snacks requires dangerous jumps past spikes and monsters.
The unusual hold-and-release jumping system gives the game a learning curve. Once the player understands momentum, longer jumps become easier to judge. Food collection, couch landings, enemy avoidance, and the useful remote control give each level more to think about than simply moving from the left side of the screen to the right.
